The Mashasha Water Project in Mzila Village, located in Mangwe District, exemplifies the remarkable spirit of unity among community members and migrant workers. Thanks to this fully functional piped water scheme, the residents of Mzila Village now enjoy access to clean and safe drinking water.

Conceived and implemented through collaborative efforts between the migrant worker community, local leaders, and villagers, the piped water scheme draws its source from the nearby Ramakwebane River. This transformative project has significantly improved the lives of over 40 households in Mzila Village. No longer do residents have to trek long distances to fetch water from the river or rely on contaminated sources such as unprotected wells.

In an interview with a beneficiary of the scheme, she shared, “This water scheme has really impacted our lives. During the summer season, we had to walk long distances to fetch water from the river, and sometimes we would need to dig deep to reach it, all while managing other household chores. The successful installation of this scheme has made our lives much easier by eliminating the long walks and physical exhaustion.”

The piped water scheme, designed and implemented in partnership with local authorities and community members, has brought numerous benefits to the village. Waterborne illnesses are now on the decline particularly among children of school going age. Women have more time for economic activities, and the overall health of the community has gradually on an increase.

The success of the Mashasha Water Project, a community-led initiative demonstrates that with collaboration and determination, communities have the potential to drive their own development and create a better future for all.
