Tavonga Chiriga Finds Her Voice and Empowers Others through WLSB
Written by Loraine Phiri

Tavonga Chiriga, a member of the Women Leaders Sounding Board (WLSB), has seen a remarkable transformation in herself since joining the hub. Chiriga’s story highlights the impact WLSB is having on aspiring women leaders across the Matabeleland Region.
Chiriga’s journey with WLSB began with a passion for community involvement. The WLSB trainings, Chiriga emphasizes, have been instrumental in her growth. With areas like service provision, particularly tackling water shortages and sanitation issues and promoting access to family planning, being where Chiriga feels most empowered to make a difference.
“WILD trainings have been instrumental in my leadership journey, emphasising women empowerment, health, and community development. I have gained valuable knowledge on addressing water shortage issues, promoting access to family planning, and advocating for improved sanitation,” said Chiriga.
Empowered by the program’s focus on women’s empowerment and leadership development, Chiriga has become more involved in community development.
Since I joined the WLSB I have become more involved in my community. I shared insights on women empowerment and health at the Female Students Summit held under the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) on May 31, 2024. Where, I inspired fellow students to embrace leadership roles and contribute to the development of their communities,” said Chiriga.
One of the biggest challenges women face in shaping their communities, Chiriga points out, is the “glass ceiling effect.” This phenomenon perpetuates gender inequality and limits women’s opportunities to lead and make decisions. Self-doubt, imposter syndrome, fear of being perceived as aggressive or ambitious, and internalized gender bias are all contributing factors to this effect.
However, Chiriga’s experience with WLSB demonstrates the power of breaking down these barriers. “I’ve helped empower fellow female students, promote health and sanitation awareness, and advocate for access to family planning and education,” she says. “This creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to take action.”
Chiriga’s message to other women is one of encouragement and strength. She reminds them of their inner resilience: “You are stronger than you think!” she exclaims. “If you can tackle period pain, estimated to be 20-30 times worse than a heart attack, you can tackle anything! Don’t be afraid to break the ceiling and take up leadership spaces. The change you create will benefit future generations. Remember, empowered women empower women! Let’s rise together and create a brighter future for all.”
Chiriga’s story exemplifies the transformative potential of WLSB. By equipping women with knowledge, skills, and confidence, the program empowers them to become leaders who drive positive development in their communities.
