ARC raises awareness on #72campaign
The Adult Rape Clinic is participating at the Zimbabwe International Trader Fair in order to increase awareness on the #72 campaign which seeks to encourage citizens to report cases of sexual gender-based violence within three days.
Speaking to Infocus news, Gender and Advocacy Officer Phephisiwe Muranda said the organisation is encouraging people to report as soon as possible
“Rape is very traumatic and painful experience it is a medical emergency. One should get medical services such as psychosocial support, HIV testing services, postexposure prophylaxis, pregnancy testing, emergency contraceptive pills, medical examinations, collection of forensic evidence, referrals to other services and follow up care so as to prevent severe effects of the assault,” she said.
Muranda said ARC offers all services free of charge so as to ensure that everyone has access to these services.
“Our services are free of charge. We have consortiums and we collaborate. We are also part of the victim friendly system whereby we refer and we work with Ministry of Health and Childcare and the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises,” she said
Muranda said it is unfortunate that people report when the effects of rape have started to manifest.
“During the covid-19 period, there was an increase in the number of people that were impacted negatively. more cases were happening but there was limited reporting of these cases because of the lockdown restrictions.
However, when a survivor has suffered SGBV we have a vibrant referral pathway system whereby each service provider assists and refers to the next relevant service provider,” said Muranda.
Muranda said ARC hopes to achieve a society were sexual gender-based violence is unthinkable and where everyone plays a positive role towards prevention and response.
