Gwanda community meets councillors to discuss their roles and responsibilities
Women’s Institute for Leadership Development together with the Gwanda Residents Association on Friday conducted an Interparty dialogue.
The meeting sought to uncover the community’s understanding of councillors’ roles and responsibilities and share the legally prescribed duties of a councillor. During the meeting, the community expressed their views on the kind of councillors they would want to have in office in the upcoming election. The meeting also assessed the preparedness of the community to accept women and young people as councillors and political community leaders.
Discussions revealed that councillors are guided by the Urban Councils Act and the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Former Gwanda Mayor Thandeki Mkandla and Former Town Clerk Gilbert Mlilo shared their experiences and the legally prescribed duties of councillors.
Incumbent Mayor Knowledge Ndlovu said the council is transparent in its operations. He said a satellite revenue office has been established in Spitzkop to encourage and increase revenue collection, roads in the central business district have been rehabilitated, construction of a 5 megalitre water reservoir has been completed, public toilets have been constructed in the Hlalani Kuhle area. Ndlovu said Gwanda Town is facing challenges as the council is owed over $4 million by residents.
