Addressing Climate Challenges Through Green Skills Development in Zimbabwe

As the intensity of climate-related shocks and hazards continues to rise, the urgency for resilience-building initiatives has reached critical levels. In Zimbabwe, marginalized groups particularly young people are disproportionately affected by these environmental challenges. Consequently, the development of green skills is essential for fortifying national strategies designed to secure their futures.
Young women, especially those from diverse backgrounds, encounter significant obstacles due to climate change. They frequently lack access to green economic empowerment opportunities, which exacerbates their vulnerability in an increasingly unstable environment. To mitigate this pressing issue, collaboration among government entities, CSOs, the private sector, and youths is imperative.
In response to this need, Women’s Institute for Leadership Development (WILD) is committed to devising a comprehensive strategy centered on green jobs. This initiative aims to create practical pathways for climate change adaptation, with a particular focus on empowering young women in Zimbabwe.
A subsequent Think Tank Engagement was convened, concentrating specifically on the Green Entrepreneurial Skills Innovation Hub. This gathering brought together experts from academia, government, local authorities, the private sector, Civil Society Organisations, and youth representatives, all dedicated to designing the Green Entrepreneurial Skills Innovation Hub.
The Green Entrepreneurial Skills Innovation Hub is focused on nurturing and expanding green economic opportunities for youths, with a special emphasis on supporting young women from diverse backgrounds. The initiative aspires to empower young individuals to spearhead transformative change toward a more sustainable economy.
During this engagement, participants exchanged ideas regarding the hub’s design and implementation, exploring innovative solutions in renewable energy, smart agriculture, the circular economy, and sustainable mining. They discussed practical strategies tailored to meet the unique needs of specific regions, considering local skills, market demands, and the perspectives of the youths.
Through these collaborative efforts, WILD and its strategic partners are laying the groundwork for a greener, more equitable future in Zimbabwe. By prioritizing the empowerment of young women and fostering green economic opportunities, they are setting the stage for sustainable development.
